The Vaper’s Guide To Oils

Vaporizer Oils

The vaporizer trend is on the rise and has a bright future as more regions look to legalize the condensate market. At the core of this growing market are the oils. They are the liquid that goes into a vape pen that becomes vapor.

There are two main categories of oils; cannabis and essential.

Cannabis Oils

The most talked about concentrate on the market is cannabis oils. Cannabis vape pens are built to handle any of the three categories of marijuana oil:

  • THC Oil
  • CBD Oil
  • Hemp Oil

THC Oil

When people mention cannabis oil, most often they’re referring to THC oil. This oil gets its name from Tetrahydrocannabinol, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana.

Tetrahydrocannabinol oils have a high concentration of THC. It’s the most popular cannabis oil for recreational use since THC is the ingredient that gives vapers their buzz. Despite its popularity for recreation, it also has medicinal uses.

THC has become well-known in medical use for pain management and treating psychiatric symptoms like depression. It is also starting to see use in treating:

  • Anorexia
  • Spasticity
  • MS
  • Epilepsy
  • Asthma

CBD Oil

CBD oil tends to be viewed more often as a medicinal vape oil. This reputation is a mix of its lack of psychoactive properties and its multiple medical uses. CBD is Cannabidiol, which our bodies produce naturally through our Endocannabinoid system. This system releases cannabidiol for its properties, including:

  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Anti-bacterial
  • Antispasmodic (relieving involuntary muscle spasms)

By vaping cannabidiol oil, users stimulate the endocannabinoid system, causing it to release CBD. This allows them to take advantage of its medical properties. CBD oil is used for many treatments that don’t require the pain management effect of THC.

One of the big benefits of CBD is that it doesn’t create the high of THC. As a result, CBD vape pens allow users to go about their day unimpaired.

There are two categories of CBD Oil; full spectrum and isolate.

Full Spectrum CBD Oil

Oils with full spectrum cannabidiol has everything from the full plant. That includes CBD, CBN, CBG, and even a low concentration of THC. The benefit of this is that the oil is more bioavailable as part of the full spectrum.

It’s much like how an orange is a much more effective delivery system for Vitamin C than Vitamin C tablets. The isolated vitamin lacks the support and interconnectivity found in an orange, so it can’t offer the same bioavailability.

Full spectrum really is the better option, unless you have specific reasons for choosing an isolate.

Isolate CBD Oil

Although it lacks the bioavailability of full spectrum, isolate CBD oil does have its place. Generally, this place is with people who face routine drug testing. Since CBD doesn’t show up on drug tests, people can safely use it for medical vaping or recreational purposes even if getting tested.

If purchasing for this reason, it’s important to be aware of the purity. A lower purity, like 95% may have detectable levels of THC. It’s not enough to fail legal limit tests, but it is enough to show up on a marijuana breathalyzer. Instead, look for 99% or higher purity levels.

Hemp Oil

Vaping hemp oil is different from the other cannabis oils. It has a terpene profile that creates the flavor and aroma users desire, and it doesn’t have as potent medical effects as other true cannabis oils. The concentrations of psychoactive and anti-inflammatory ingredients are significantly lower.

Hemp oil is more similar to vaping essential oils. Some hemp vape liquid is sold as “CBD Hemp Oil” – be cautious when buying these if looking for CBD effects.

If the information is available, check to see if there is a significant concentration. If not, a good indicator is the availability of the product. Check if it sells to states or countries where marijuana isn’t legal, if so, it’s likely too low of a concentration.

Also, make sure you are buying hemp oil made for vape pens. Hemp oil is also sold as a cooking ingredient that has a number of health benefits. Most oils that are made for oral consumption aren’t safe for vaping.

Essential Oils

While essential oils provide neither the high nor the medical advantages of cannabis oils, they remain popular. They use oils like chamomile, peppermint, and lavender. All of which have pleasant flavors and aromas.

People don’t just vape essential oils for the taste. They can also have calming and therapeutic effects. While some of the claims about aromatherapy are unproven, the Mayo Clinic does list some benefits studies have found:

  • Relieve anxiety
  • Improve sleep
  • Increase calmness

There remains a lot of research to be done on essential oils, and they are currently unregulated by the FDA. So be aware that the claims on these oils are not necessarily proven. Still, many people swear by their benefits whether for the pleasant taste and aroma, or for therapeutic effects.

As with hemp oil, make sure to follow the directions and make sure that the oil is intended for vaping.

High vs. Low Viscosity Oils

Oils come in different viscosities. The temperature of the vape pen also affects how viscous the oil is. Whether to choose high or low viscosity oil depends on your preferences.

High viscosity oils can sometimes produce fuller, thicker vapor clouds. It’s ideal for people who use Sub-Ohm vape pens and is the best option for dabbing as well.

Lower viscosity oils are less harsh and are preferred by people who inhale mouth-to-lung. This is most common among people who use vape pens to help quit smoking.
